Architects Ali Bounds, Shushana Khachatrian and Andrew Waugh, furniture designer Peter Mabeo and design strategist Malin Orebäck have joined as Dezeen Awards 2024 judges.

Now in its seventh year, the programme has become the ultimate accolade for architects and designers everywhere, with winners selected by a prestigious panel of international judges.

Read on to learn more about the latest judges joining this year's judging panel.

Sydney-based architect Bounds is the co-CEO at Australian architecture firm BVN and will join landscape architect Martha Schwartz on this year's architecture panel.

Bound's experience spans various sectors including civic, education and adaptive reuse projects that focus on creating connections and placemaking.

Notable projects by BVN include the Prince of Wales Hospital in Randwick, Griffith University in Brisbane, as well as Quay Quarter Tower in Sydney and Atlassian Central, currently under construction in Sydney.

Botswana-based furniture designer Mabeo will sit alongside designer Inga Sempé on this year's judging panel. Mabeo opened his eponymous practice Mabeo Studio in collaboration with local craftspeople and artisans in Botswana to spotlight traditional craft techniques.

The studio has worked on international projects for 5-star hotels in Stockholm, Milan and New York, as well as bespoke furniture pieces for residential, cultural and commercial clients.

Mabeo's work has been exhibited at international design events and was awarded best craftsmanship at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in New York. In 2021, Fendi appointed Mabeo Studio to design their furniture, exhibition space and communication material at Design Miami.

London-based architect Waugh is the founding director at Waugh Thistleton Architects and will join fashion designer Adebayo Oke-Lawal on this year's sustainability panel.

The practice is dedicated to sustainability and specialises in timber buildings. Recent examples include a mass-timber office building in Shoreditch and a cross-laminated timber residential block in Hackney.

Waugh is a spokesperson and lecturer for low-carbon architecture communicating the urgency for change to mitigate the climate crisis. In recognition of his work, Waugh was acknowledged by the RIBA President's Award for Research and the UK Practice of the Year award in 2023. He also received a Stirling Prize nomination in 2018.

Orebäck is a design strategist and senior advisor for Circular Business Lab at the Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE) and will also sit on the sustainability panel. Orebäck advises companies and startups to transition to circular economy principles.

The company recently collaborated with Vidde Mobility to optimise its circular business model for an electric snowmobile and PaperShell to launch a new range of bio-based products and solutions.

Before RISE, Orebäck led sustainability at McKinsey Design working with global brands in energy, packaging, waste management, regenerative farming and electrification of transports.

Architect Khachatrian is the founder of Armenian-based Studio Shoo and will join Bounds on this year's architecture panel. Studio Shoo has worked on hotels, restaurants, and public interiors with projects in Dubai, Tashkent, Yerevan, Tbilisi, Thessaloniki and Nha Trang.

Recent projects include the Courtyard by Marriott in Yerevan, the Ibis Budget Hotel in Tbilisi, and the Mövenpick Hotel in Yerevan.

Khachatrian is currently based in Milan and is studying product and furniture design at Istituto Marangoni to expand her design expertise.
