Fernando Guerra

Dezeen Awards 2021 judge Fernando Guerra

Fernando Guerra is a pioneer of contemporary architectural photography, and co-founder of studio FG+SG.

Initially trained as an architect, Guerra understands the architect’s process of understanding spatiality through wandering, scrutinising and associating ideas, shapes and dimensions. When he photographs buildings, it is more of an examination rather than a recorded perception.

Guerra’s work is regularly seen in international publications such as Casabella, Wallpaper, Dwell, Icon, Domus, A+U and many more. FG +SG has collaborated with many Portuguese architects including Álvaro Siza, Carlos Castanheira, Manuel Mateus, Manuel Graça Dias, Gonçalo Byrne, ARX Portugal, João Luís Carrilho da Graça and Promontório Arquitectos. International collaborators include Márcio Kogan, Isay Weinfeld, Arthur Casas, Zaha Hadid, Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, among others.

In 2012 he was nominated for Canon Explorer, as well as being an ambassador for Canon Europe. In 2015 the MoMA acquired six of Fernando’s projects for their permanent collection, and in the same year Fernando won Arcaid Images Architectural Photographer of the Year and Plataforma Arquitectura’s Photography Prize Project of the year. In 2016 he was an award winner in Architizer’s Architecture + Photography category.
