Sebastian Cox

Dezeen Awards 2021 judge Sebastian Cox

Sebastian Cox is a South London based designer, maker and environmentalist who creates heirloom furniture, lighting and home accessories.

His passion for sustainability and use of abundant and overlooked materials stems from his childhood, spent surrounded by woodland, and later his studies in Furniture Design and Craftsmanship and a Masters in Design. He is inspired by the generations of craftspeople before us who used a limited palette of renewable materials, extracted from the earth in a responsible way.

Sebastian founded his 0 waste design studio in 2010, and continues to respond to the question ‘what resources does nature want to give us?’. The studio’s mission is to store 100 tonnes of c02 in the wooden objects it makes each year, while the woodlands regenerate, with the desire to double the area of woodland in the UK by 2040.

He harvests and mills his own timber, using traditional methods combined with new technology to produce objects that are both functional and beautiful. He collaborates with like minded creators who share his vision for a regenerative material future, and his clients include Sir Terence Conran and Christopher Bailey.

Sebastian’s work has received a Design Guild Mark, and has been featured in Elle Decoration, Homes & Gardens and EKKB. Sebastian himself has been recognised as one of the most influential designers in London by the London Evening Standard and listed amongst Forbes’ 30 under 30 to watch.
