Mischer'Traxler's flute for Perrier-Jouët "makes champagne bubble at a certain spot"
Small Discoveries: in our second movie for Perrier-Jouët, Viennese design duo Mischer'Traxler discuss the champagne flute they designed for the brand, which causes bubbles to stream from a small engraved moth.

Mischer'Traxler's champagne flute for champagne house Perrier-Jouët features the outline of four moths around one side of the glass.
The smallest of the insects has been laser-engraved on the inside of the flute, creating an irregular surface that triggers bursts of fine bubbles when champagne is poured into the glass.

"The flutes are designed to be very simple at first glance," Thomas Traxler explains in the movie. "You see a flock of moths. But as soon as you pour in champagne, one of the moths becomes the starting point for all the bubbles."

Traxler says he and his partner Katharina Mischer got the idea after discovering what causes champagne to effervesce when it is poured into a glass.
"During our research on flutes of champagne, we found out that champagne actually starts bubbling where there are irregularities in the glass," he explains.

"It's the first time that [Perrier-Jouët has] engraved a glass in such a way to really make champagne bubble at a certain spot," Mischer adds. "It's not so easy to engrave a glass from the inside, because of course you cannot go through the glass [from the outside]. You have to find the perfect angle."
The champagne flute is the first product to be released in the Small Discoveries series, a year-long collaboration between Mischer'Traxler and Perrier-Jouët, which was launched at Design Miami 2014 with an interactive installation called Ephemerā.
You can watch Mischer'Traxler discuss the installation in the movie above.

The flutes will be available to buy together with a bottle of Perrier-Jouët's Blason Rosé in a special gift pack, which will be released by Perrier-Jouët in time for Valentine's Day.
The cardboard packaging, which Mischer'Traxler also designed, features laser-cut bubbles and insects.
"We tried to incorporate species that are used in the Ephemerā installation," says Traxler.
