School: Georgia Institute of Technology
Course: Graduate Studio
Location: Shenzhen, China
Course dates: 19 August to 16 December 2024
Application deadline: 15 June 2024

The Georgia Institute of Technology has offered places on its Master of Industrial Design (MID) programme in Shenzhen since 2022. This programme provides students access to the global supply chain and manufacturing facilities in the heart of China's Silicon Valley. From conceptualisation to prototype to production, students can use the state-of-the-art facilities on the Shenzhen campus to bring their projects to life.

A rotation of Atlanta faculty members teaches the MID studio courses present on the Shenzhen campus every semester. These faculty members are committed to connecting advanced design research to the dynamic manufacturing system in Shenzhen. Their studio projects focus on emerging issues such as sustainability, human-centred design experience and health design.

MID Studio embarked on a mission to address the pressing climate issue of extreme heat through innovative product design. CloudCover Pro is an outdoor shade, leveraging advanced "lighter than air" airship construction, rechargeable solar panels, and drone technology to deliver life-saving shade whenever and wherever it is needed. It provides optimal shade coverage by autonomously adjusting to the sun's trajectory.

The MID studio addresses social and environmental issues with creativity, empathy and rigorous research.
